Byrnie, our Flatbrook foundation dog, is a companion and family dog first. He is loving and loyal, friendly but aloof with strangers, gentle, respectful and bold. Byrnie is an impressive handsome dog, standing 24” at the shoulders. He has a large head in the French style and a full, dense coat that makes him appear bigger than his seventy pounds.
In the field, Byrnie is a great companion. He runs
a bit bigger than the normal Griff, with the wonderful stamina of a true versatile dog. He has a great nose, superior pointing instinct, prey driven and almost always, a strong desire to please. He earned his AKC SH and NAVHDA Utility Prize II (177 points) and two Prize III’s (184 points and 176 points) and is training for his AKC MH title.
All that aside, Byrnie's most notable characteristic is his face, and in particular his eyes. His eyes, like many Griffons, are human like and
amazingly expressive -- adding to his ability to communicate. More than a few people have said "that dog was charisma." His special Griffon
character was captured on Sinclair Stratton's fanciful portrait of him which
was on the cover of her 2007 signature calendar.
We liked the Flatbrook line because they’re friendly dogs, with classic good looks, good coats, sound temperaments, and
excellent hunting skills, of the correct size with minimal health concerns.
Byrnie’s blood lines are from the Fireside, Wet Acres and Vom Hampton kennels. Tracing the Flatbrook line further, Byrnie is 5/16ths from the superb Goose
Creeks “A” litter, all CH/SH’s or VC‘s, 4/16ths from the indomitable CH Fireside’s Animation JH* (Annie), and 14/64ths from Champion Von Herrenhausen stock (Duke and Baron, Sampson and Sophie and Gretta). These lines produced many wonderful field and show dogs including two of the most famous Griff show dogs, CH Digger Vom Hampton, B’s grandsire, and CH Fireside’s Rollicking Ruckus JH,
B’s great-grandsire.
*CH Fireside’s Animation JH Multiple Group Placing Bitch, Pedigree #1 dog, 1990 and 1991, #1 Brood Bitch at National Specialty, Best of Breed, Westminster Kennel Club. She is a sister to two dogs used by the WPGCA to establish their new line of Griffons. These two dogs were selected for their natural hunting abilities and outstanding Griffon characteristic -- traits embodied in Annie. Byrnie and many of his offspring bear a remarkable resemblance to Annie.
Byrnie is available for stud to approved bitches:
